It’s the Friday of a short week and what should be a casual late-summer weekend feels a little fraught with all the smoke in the air from the fires out west, and all eyes on Florida (where I grew up and still have a lot of friends and family) as Irma approaches ominously (and with Jose in her wake).
But, hey, it is still Friday (and a funky one at that) so let’s just kick out the jams with this burner from Lil’ Lavair and The Fabulous Jades. “Cold Heat” was originally the B-side to a single that came out in the late 60’s. It resurfaced in Keb Darge’s epic 90’s funk sets and eventually was selected as the title track to Now Again’s epic funk comp, Cold Heat: Heavy Funk Rarities 1968-74.
There’s little info to be found about Lil’ Lavair and The Fabulous Jades. All I know is that they hail from San Bernardino and are widely revered by funk aficionados and record collectors. I also know that this funky number hits the spot on this extra-funky Friday.
B-side wins again. Dig.
